Overview

Now fully open, UCL East gives University College London a second home to go alongside its long-standing base in Bloomsbury, central London. Located within the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, UCL East is part of the trendy East Bank cultural and educational legacy of London 2012. With 54% of admissions last year drawn from abroad, no other university recruits undergraduates from overseas on a larger scale. UCL was founded in 1826 and, as it approaches its bicentenary, it remains true to its founding principle of equality in all things, providing £11.7m in financial support to around 30% of the intake last year, while around one in six gained a place via a contextual offer. There is academic strength across all disciplines and its free-thinking graduates are in demand - the latest High Fliers report found UCL was targeted by more top employers than any other London university. That legendary free-thinking will be in evidence in court in 2026 when around 5,000 current and former students take landmark legal action against the university over Covid and strike-related disruption to their degrees. Many other universities will be watching from behind the sofa.

Paying the bills

The main vehicle for supporting students is through the university's means-tested bursary scheme, which pays out to all students from homes with up to £42,875 annual household income. For students from homes where income is no more than £16,000, the sum paid is £3,000 for each year of a degree programme, dropping to £2,000 per year (up to £25,000 annual income), then £1,500 (up to £37,000) and £1,000 per year (up to £42,875). In addition, accommodation bursaries of £1,070 are given to students living in UCL-owned rooms who are in receipt of any level of UCL bursary in their first year of study. This rises to £1,605 if they also gained their place through an Access UCL contextual offer. Receiving an Access UCL offer alone qualifies first-years for a £535 accommodation discount. In addition to an annual bursary spend of £8.2m, UCL offers around £3m of scholarships based primarily on financial need, but it may also consider academic merit, 다파벳카지노 specific subject criteria and demonstrating leadership. Prices for UCL self-catered rooms cost from £6,036 for a 39-week tenancy to £14,453 for 39 weeks. Catered halls range in price from £8,788 to £16,052 for 39 weeks.

What's new?

The new UCL East development, which acts as a base for more than 50 new cross-disciplinary and interdisciplinary degrees, consists of two main buildings, One Pool Street and Marshgate, with the latter opening in late 2023. One Pool Street houses research labs and studios exploring ecology, robotics, urbanism, culture, disability and heritage. A lecture theatre doubles up as a cinema and there is accommodation for 500 students. Marshgate contains teaching areas, fabrication workshops and the UCL Institute of Making. Both buildings sit within the East Bank development that also houses Sadler's Wells East, the V&A East and the BBC music studios. With the 2012 Olympic sports facilities and the Westfield shopping centre on the doorstep, a place at UCL East will become keenly contested. All students will also benefit from UCL's new Student Life Strategy, which aims to expand the number of co-curricular and extracurricular activities available in areas such as sport, the arts and volunteering. The 2025 QS World University Rankings published in June placed UCL ninth in the world and fourth in the UK, confirming our overall UK ranking for the university last year.

Admissions, teaching and student support

Contextual offers made at between one and five A-level grades (or equivalent) below UCL's standard entry requirements are available under the Access UCL scheme for undergraduate students drawn from groups that are under-represented on campus. Around one in six of the undergraduate intake last year received a contextual offer. Qualification criteria include attending a state school, being care experienced or a young carer, being estranged, and living in a postcode and/or going to a school in a postcode among the most deprived or from which the fewest progress to university. Full terms are on the UCL website. All students admitted via Access UCL get enhanced academic and careers support to help with the transition to university and beyond. The standard of mental health and wellbeing services has been recognised by the Student Minds University Mental Health Charter Award; UCL is one of only 10 institutions to gain it to date. Among UCL's many initiatives to promote student wellbeing is the offer of single-session therapy for all final-year students in their third term. Additionally, therapy dogs visit the campus once a month and special events are run throughout the year, including an annual mental health day, Wobble Week and Beat The January Blues. Student support and wellbeing staff (SSW) are based in all academic departments. Student residence advisers provide peer-to-peer support and deliver three activities a week in halls, while the SSW team hosts around 100 wellbeing events a year.
