Charles the Humble Technician shows how to replace the G28 Engine Speed Sensor. This sensor is situated at the edge of transmission, above the flywheel gear. It transmits a signal to the ECU via the grey wire T55/49 and then to the tachometer located on the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

The grey wire is located at the edges of the transmission, directly above the flywheel ring. The sensor sends a signal via the grey wire to pin T55/49. The ECU then utilizes this information to regulate the flow of fuel, timig and boost. It also sends an indication to the G5 Tachometer in instrument cluster.

The sensor is used to link the G40 Camshaft position Sensor. The ecu has to know when the crankshaft has reached TDC, and the position of the camshaft, to trigger the spark and injectors.

If this sensor fails, the ECU will display a P00160 error message. This means that the Crank Shaft is not in sync with the Intake Camshaft. It could also indicate the possibility of a chain stretch or jump in the chain link of the upper chain. The code won't show without the additional information supplied by other sensors (G4 or G40).

Testing is a bit tricky as there are two different pins for the connector and they have different functions however the best way to test it is to measure resistance between the sensor and the ECU. It should read approximately 1000 ohms if the sensor is operating at its maximum. If you're having issues with this part, check for evidence of oil or coolant in the connector bay.

2. Injectors

Yesterday accelerating full speed from highway paytoll, i experienced a big cut in power like the engine is out of gas or injectors are not firing at all. In the morning, i removed the spark plugs, 3 were drenched with gazoline the fourth one was dry. I put a piece of tissue over each hole in the injector and when I turn the engine on without sparks, the ones that have gazoline pop right out. The fourth one remains closed. I tested the ground connection of ECU pins 14,30, and 48/55. I found 0ohm. I'm assuming that the issue is in another location.

I also tried to reset the PID without success. The car will start when the G28 is disconnected and it runs perfectly when it is plugged in but it still has intermittent misfire issues at higher RPM. The temperature sensor replacement key for audi coolant (G62) shows the wrong temperature of that is -49c even after unplugging it. I also noticed that the oil gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bar but the actual pressure is zero.

I'm not sure what to do, as i feel i have pretty much completely ruled out all other possibilities. But i am afraid i might have missed something. If anyone has suggestions, please share them! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump in the g28 can be activated by a signal sent from the RPM sensor. The GM-style transmitter is the same as the G4 and they both work in the 80, 100 200, UrS and RS2 cars which is why you can easily locate one at a wrecking yard or at a parts store.
