How to Replace an audi car key holder G28 Engine Speed Sensor

In this video, Charles the humble mechanic demonstrates how to replace the G28 engine speed sensor. This sensor is located near the edges of the transmission above the flywheel ring gear. It transmits a signal to the ECU via a grey wire T55/49, then to the tachometer in the instrument cluster.

The grey wire is situated on the outside of the transmission, replacement key for Audi a4 above the flywheel ring. The sensor transmits a signal via the grey wire to pin T55/49. The ECU then uses this information to control the boost, fuel, and timig. It also sends an indication to the G5 tachometer inside the instrument cluster.

The sensor is used to connect the G40 Camshaft position Sensor. The ecu needs to know when the crankshaft is TDC and where the camshaft is located so that it can start spark and injectors in the right way.

If this sensor fails to function, the ECU will display an error code P00160. This indicates that the Crank Shaft is out of alignment with the Intake Camshaft. It could also be a sign of an issue with the chain or a jump in the chain link of the upper timing chain. The code won't appear without the additional information provided by other sensors (G4 or G40).

Testing is a bit tricky as there are two different connector pins and they have different functions but the best way to test it is by measuring resistance between the sensor and the ECU. It should read about 1000 ohms when it is operating at its maximum. If you're having issues with this part, check for evidence of coolant or oil in the connector bay.

2. Injectors

Yesterday, as i was accelerating off the highway paytoll at maximum speed I noticed a significant reduction in power. It was like the engine had run out of gas. Or, my injectors weren't firing. I took out the spark plugs this morning, 3 were soaked in gasoline, and the fourth was dry. I put tissue over each injector hole and when I start the engine without sparks, the 3 with gazoline jump out. The 4th one stays shut. I tested the ground connection on ECU pins 14/55, 30/55 and 48/55. I get zero Ohm. I'm assuming the issue is somewhere else.

I also tried to reset the PID without success. The car is able to start if the G28 is unplugged and is running fine when it is plugged in but it still has the intermittent misfire issue at higher RPM. The coolant sensor (G62) even if it is not plugged in, shows an ice temperature of -49c. I also noticed that the oil gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bars while the actual pressure is 0.

I'm not sure what to do. I feel like i've pretty much all other possibilities out. I'm afraid i may have missed something. If anyone has any suggestions, please let me know! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump in the g28 can be activated by a signal from the RPM sensor. The GM-style transmitter is identical to the G4 sender and works on the 80,100,200, UrS, and RS2 vehicles. It is easy to find an extra in a wrecking shop or a parts store. It is easy to test them - simply put your DMM into resistance mode and determine the distance between pins 1 and 2 (with the bump at the connector end facing upwards). They must be infinite Ohms.

4. ECU

The ECU of our 20vt turbo (3B AAN ABY ADU) engines needs to be aware of the position and speed of the crankshaft to determine timing of the fuel injector, etc. To do this, it makes use of a Crank Position Sensor (G4) and an Engine Speed Sensor (G28).
